‘Astronomical opportunity’: registration open for third annual virtual Michigan Girls Future Flight Challenge

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WJMN) — Michigan girls in fourth- through eighth-grade are invited to team up this fall for the third annual virtual, free, state-wide aerospace competition presented by Women of Aerospace Industry Association of Michigan (WAIAM).

The Flight Challenge is a fun, creative way for students to learn about a career in aerospace, and ultimately a way to strengthen the talent pipeline in Michigan.

This year, the competition will start with a virtual kickoff event October 12. Teams of 2-6 girls from grades 4-8 can register now and will receive an informational event packet October 11, the day before kickoff.

Upon the start of the competition, teams will choose one of three provided challenge statements and start brainstorming their flight solution.

They will navigate subjects of engineering, design, finance, marketing and business planning—and they will receive mentoring from professional women from Michigan in the aerospace industry along the way,

Participants will have four weeks to complete the challenge. Teams will present their work virtually November 9, and the top teams will be awarded prizes. Every participant will receive a free T-shirt.

This event is offered at no cost for all participating girls across the state thanks to the AIAM Foundation .
