WEST ISHPEMING, Mich. (WJMN)- Women are building for a better community this week with Marquette County Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build Week.

Women from across the county gather in West Ishpeming to help build two homes for HFH recipients. Two neighboring homes are on the agenda this year, and both have big plans.

“We have been putting up siding,” said volunteer, Arel Aranyos. “When we got to this job site, there was no siding on this house at all. So we put up all of this smoke-colored siding. It is the annual Women’s Day build. And it’s not just for women. So if guys want to come out and build too, they’re more than welcome. Tomorrow, the siding will probably be finished. And then I did hear that windows may be going on to the other house. It is pretty cool. For a lot of people that I know that work in the construction industry, that’s like the dad thing that, ‘I built that sidewalk’ or ‘I built that house.’ So now us women can do that too.”

The homeowners even became their own volunteers.

“And then also what’s cool too is that the homeowners actually come out to the build sites and build with us,” Aranyos said. “So it’s really amazing to see the homeowner and, you know, get to meet them and see them not only work on their house, but also just, you know, say hi and meet them and appreciate all of the hard work of all of these people coming together to build a house.”

The Women Build is August 14th to August 17th, check out the Yoopers United page to learn more or sign up to help.
