Marquette therapy dog to have specialty beer named after her

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WJMN) – Kognisjon Bryggeri and the Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter (UPAWS) are partnering up once again for the “Name a Beer After Your Pet” fundraising event.

Beginning in 2016, Kognisjon has live auctioned “Name a Beer After Your Pet” at the UPAWS Annual Cause for Paws event. Over $20,000 has been raised by donors for this auction item since its inception. This year’s bid winner is a Golden Retriever named Sal. Sal is a familiar face in Marquette through her work as a therapy dog and part of the original pack of Wild Pups at Northern Michigan University. She is also a three-time canine good citizen recipient and the award winning UPAWS Silver Tag and Purple Paw Award recipient.

“We meet with the donor, I meet with the donor, and we customize this beer to kind of have some personality traits of the animal,” said UPAWS Volunteer Amber Talo. “This beer will be as unique as the dog. So, this beer is a golden ale for our girl, golden girl with a hint of lemon and honey. Just a touch of sweetness. Which is something that Sal spreads everywhere she goes. A little bit of cheer, a little bit of sunshine as a therapy dog. That’s what she offers. And so, I think this beer will make a lot of people smile in the way that Sal does. And each of the beers have been special in that they are limited. So, it’s on draft once it taps out, that’s it. That was your chance to try this really special beer and your chance to help UPAWS in the process.”

“Sal’s Golden Ale” specialty brew release party is this Friday, August 23 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Kognisjon Brygerri in Marquette. A portion of each pint sale will be donated to UPAWS. Limited edition t-shirts will also be available for $20.
