Negaunee, Mich. (WJMN)- Negaunee is known for its history and its architecture. But Slap Shot Sandwiches is sure to be added to that list.

“This is a historical Negaunee building,” said Owner and manager Jaquelyn Lambert,  “It’s been here for a long time and it’s gone through many different life cycles. It was a haberdashery at one point. It was a dress shop, it was an insurance building. So the locals have been excited to see something going on with this historic building.”

Slap Shot Sandwiches is a small building with huge flavors. The name comes from a love of hockey, classic films, and U.P. heritage.

“The vintage Hockey theme was inspired by my husband, Alex, who’s our other owner,” said Lambert “He grew up in Marquette County playing hockey and our family plays hockey. Our nephews play hockey. And we know that Negaunee is a big hockey town, so we wanted to pay homage to that and have something a little fun and quirky. And our dining room is sort of a vintage diner vibe to go with the vintage hockey theme. And of course, ‘Slap Shot’ comes from the movie Slapshot, which has a lot of U.P. history, doesn’t quite take place in the U.P., but some of the actors, some of the hockey players from the movie are from up here. So that’s sort of where we got the Inspo for Slap Shot.”

The menu comprises a variety of reimagined sandwiches taken to a new level while still keeping the hometown, homemade feeling. From classics like a Philly cheesesteak to a biscuits and gravy breakfast sandwich you can find anything your hungry heart desires.

When asked about what seems to be the community favorite Lambert said; “I would say our cheese fries are the number one most popular. Those are something that has been missing in the last few years, so we’ve been able to fill that void. But on our lunch menu, I would say the cheesesteak has been our most popular sandwich by far. all of our sausages and meats we do in-house, so our cudighi is a home recipe, our chorizo sausage on the torta is homemade, and our breakfast sausage and our corned beef for our Reuben. Those are all made in-house we offer gluten-free bread made locally from Honey Baked Bread Company and Marquette. Our produce comes local from Partridge Creek Farms and we get our eggs locally sourced from Cloverfield Farms in Skandia as well.”

You can stop in to Slap Shot Sandwiches from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm Monday through Saturday and enjoy your breakfast any time of the day.
