Seney, Mich. (WJMN) – Everywhere you go in the Upper Peninsula you’ll find wooden statues freshly carved on the side of the highway beckoning you to come and take a look. At the lumberjack fest, you can finally listen to that call and maybe even bring one home.

The Lumberjack Fest is an annual event to raise money for the Seney Historical Society. The lumberjack fest is full of food, games, fishing, art, and free admission into the Seney History Museum. One of these games includes head-to-head axe throwing from Half-Axed Axe Throwing in Rudyard.

“We’re here at the Seney Lumberjack Festival and there’s a lot of stuff going on,” said Half-Axed Co-owner Carol Eby. “So we have a mobile ax-throwing trailer, which is a lot of fun. We also have a little one for kids under eight to throw for free. We have a lot of specials when we do this especially, you know, comedy competition, like my husband’s famous thing, he says. Anger management for married couples whenever they can take their aggression out. And then it’s comical because the couples will go out there and they’ll try to compete. It’s very competitive, very, very competitive. The Lumberjack Fest here in Seney, it’s it helps out to historical sites, you know just keeps their cities going, gets the families together.”

Mixed in with the strong smell of pine and cedar is classic fair food and sweet barbeque coming from the food trucks nearby.

“It’s just a good promotion for the city of Seney,” Co-owner of Styes Guys U.P BBQ John Styes. “It’s not a big town, but it draws a lot of people. That’s good for the community and brings notice here. A lot is going on, lots of vendors this year. It’s just been great. The beer tent is going to be starting up pretty soon. They’ll have live music and lots of people.”

The Lumberjack Festival wrapped up Saturday evening with several contests including a beard contest, horse pulls, and a dunk tank.
