MARQUETTE, Mich. (WJMN) — After rumors of federal agent activity in the Keweenaw Peninsula, we’ve confirmed through court documents that FBI agents were in Laurium Wednesday morning to arrest a man on accusations that he participated in the U.S. Capitol riot on January 6, 2021.

Through freshly unsealed court records, we’ve learned that FBI agents arrested Adam Christopher Mancuso on Wednesday, and while they have been building a case against him since less than a week after the riot – records show it was a hat sporting the logo of the rap group Insane Clown Posse that gave him away.

Mancuso has been accused of four crimes which include disorderly conduct on capitol grounds and knowingly entering a restricted building with intent to disrupt government business.

In their August 23 filing for an arrest warrant, an agent with the FBI laid out their case against him.

First, they outline the basics of what happened that day: that as legislators were in the nation’s Capitol to certify the 2020 election, a large crowd gathered outside, and despite locked doors and Capitol police trying to keep them at bay, the crowd overwhelmed them to break into the building — interrupting the certification process and leading lawmakers to evacuate.

The Capitol would eventually be cleared and election certified, but not before the deaths of one Capitol police officer and four other people.

As for how the FBI figured out Mancuso’s involvement, it wasn’t difficult for investigators to begin connecting the dots.

Less than a week after the events at the capitol, the FBI received a tip that Mancuso had posted two selfies, with one showing him among the rioters inside the Capitol.

With that frame of reference, investigators were able to comb through the lower-quality security footage to see what he did and where he went. According to the FBI agent’s testimony on the arrest warrant, Mancuso’s Insane Clown Posse hat was a major advantage in their efforts to identify him, and bolster the assertion that the person seen in the surveillance video was the man they arrested in Laurium.

The agent said surveillance video shows Mancuso entering the Capitol shortly before 3 p.m., going to the Crypt and Hall of Columns before leaving about 10 minutes later.

Marcuso was then said to have re-entered into the Rotunda, put on a gas mask and confronted an officer before eventually getting forced out of the building with the rest of the group around 3:30 p.m.

In their research, agents found Mancuso wearing what appears to be the same hat seen at the Capitol in several of his other photos posted to social media.

According to court documents, Mancuso made his first appearance in federal court Wednesday but was not yet charged or arraigned.

He appears to be out on bond, and Prosecutors have until September 10 to file an indictment.
