LEFLORE COUNTY, Miss. ( WJTV ) – Two people have died after severe storms moved through Mississippi beginning on April 9, 2024.

According to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA), the second death was reported in Leflore County. MEMA previously reported a death in Scott County.

Six injuries have also been reported to MEMA due to the recent storms and flooding.

The National Weather Service Jackson confirmed an EF 1 tornado in Hinds County (Learned on April 9) and an EF 0 tornado in Madison County (Mannsdale on April 10).

Statewide, counties have reported that 179 homes were damaged. Initial damage assessments are underway.

These counties report some damage to homes ranging from affected to destroyed:

• Grenada – 1 injury, 9 homes
• Harrison – 6 homes
• Holmes – 4 homes
• Hinds – 38 homes
• Madison – 16 homes
• Marshall – 9 homes
• Neshoba – 22 homes
• Rankin – 10 homes
• Scott – 1 death, 5 injuries, 45 homes
• Warren – 16 homes
• Yazoo – 4 homes

Scott County has a shelter open at Roosevelt State Park, 2149 MS-13, Morton, MS 39117. According to the American Red Cross, it will remain open until noon on April 12, 2024.

Yazoo County emergency officials report the dam is secure near the Eastbrook Subdivision off Highway 16 East.
