JACKSON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – Math is something that comes easy to Murrah High School senior Joshua Johnson. He achieved a 32 on the ACT, but not without a lot of hard work.

“A lot of work. A lot of essays, dinners and interviews. Mostly thanks to my mother,” said Joshua.

His mother Tanya motivated him to enroll in the JPS-Tougaloo Early-College High School Program during ninth grade, which he credits for preparing him early on.

Joshua scored $2 million in college scholarships in and out of state. Ultimately, he plans to stay in Mississippi and pursue a career in electrical engineering.

“The vision for being a million dollar scholar was painted at this school, at J-TECHS by Principal [Ashley] Molden,” said Tanya, his mother.

Joshua’s family couldn’t be more proud of him.

“I’d like to say, my mother is my manager. She’s the one balancing and I kind of show up to things,” he said.

Joshua’s scholarship success is truly inspiring. His tip for success on the ACT test? “Do as much math as you can,” he said.

Joshua says he’s happy to stay local near his family and his mom’s home cooking. So far, he’s narrowed down his top three college choices: Southern Miss, Jackson State University and Mississippi College.

“He has just been a hardworking, competent, persevering student,” said Ashley Molden, Principal of JPS-Tougaloo Early-College High School Program.

Joshua is also an avid swimmer, plays the cello and enjoys spending time with his family and his dog.
