JACKSON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – Memorial Day is just around the corner. The federal holiday, which will be held on Monday, May 27, 2024, is to honor and mourn the men and women who died serving the United States.

On Thursday, there was a special ceremony to honor those who came back from service.

The table in Briarwood Presbyterian Church was filled with patriotic quilts made and donated by the Jackson Quilters Guild. The Quilts of Valor Foundation’s mission is to cover members and veterans touched by war with comfort and healing Quilts of Valor.

“Having been raised among quilters, I know what went into these quilts and having that wrapped around it. Just like every member of this quilt guild hugged and welcomed you home yet again  And it means so much,” said Neil Davis, who served in the U.S. Army.

Ray Thomas, who served in Vietnam, felt clothed in a quilt of acceptance.

“At the time, there was a lot of people who didn’t accept people that went to Vietnam. So, it was hard. We are accepted now. But, you know, back in those days we weren’t accepted like we should have been. Really,” said Thomas.
