Man found guilty in fatal hit-and-run in Hattiesburg

HATTIESBURG, Miss. ( WHLT ) – A jury found a man guilty of killing another man during a hit-and-run in Hattiesburg last year.

Pine Belt News reported David Breland, the former candidate for Forrest County Circuit Clerk, was sentenced to life in prison on August 13, 2024. He was previously charged with first-degree murder and leaving the scene of an accident causing serious injury or disfigurement.

On Saturday, April 29, 2023, police responded to a report of a pedestrian who was struck by an unknown vehicle around the South 17th Avenue and Camp Street intersection.

When officers arrived, they found the victim, 30-year-old Tyra Canady, suffering from injuries on the side of the roadway. Canady was transported to a local hospital where he later died.

Breland was arrested and booked into the Forrest County Jail.

I've got to give the leos their props! They found this guy! I don't know if they had help, but to get this guy after he ran is just percect, as far as I'm concerned! Nice job! And I don't say that often because more times than not, these things go unsolved for years. Most just collect revenue and treat the general public like shit! Congratulations on this arrest!
