JACKSON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – From the Hinds County Election Commission to the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office, requests for budget increases are a common theme.

Almost each department asked the Hinds County Board of Supervisors for more money on Thursday, August 15.

Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones asked for two transportation vans, a 10% employee pay raise and money for housing detainees.

County officials said they will review and try their best to meet the pressing needs of the departments.

“You’re talking about feeding inmates, detaining them, housing them, fuel for transportation, the conditions of the vans that we’re using to transport our detainees. It’s time for some of these to be replaced, and it’s time for us to be afforded more money so that we can properly accommodate the needs of our detainees. Again, for the safety and security of them and the safety and security of the detention staff that work in the jails,” said Jones.

“We have a lot to do with the little money that we have. We’re going to be very good stewards of our taxpayers money,” said Lure Berry, County Administrator.

Berry and the Board have less than two months to make their final decision, because the new fiscal year starts in October.
