JACKSON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – Officials with the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) said they have been involved in the response to the tire facility fire that has been burning in Jackson since Saturday, August 17.

Officials said MDEQ personnel have been on site, working closely with local firefighters, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and cleanup crews to manage the situation.

“Community air monitoring has been a priority, and we are pleased to report that all monitored constituents of concern, including particulate matter, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and benzene, have been measured below action levels, indicating that there is no current threat to public health from air quality,” MDEQ officials stated.

MDEQ personnel are also addressing fire water runoff by collecting oil resulting from the fire to prevent any potential environmental impact.

The fire started around 2:30 p.m. near East McDowell Road on Saturday. Black smoke could be seen across the metro.

Officials with the Jackson Fire Department (JFD) said the fire burned rubber tires at the location and damaged a structure. They said firefighters could be at the location for several days until the fire has been fully extinguished.

No injuries have been reported, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
