CHICAGO, Ill. ( WJTV ) – Vice President Kamala Harris will officially be named the Democratic candidate for president after this week’s Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago wraps up.

Some Mississippi Democrats have traveled to the city ahead of the convention. They’re in agreement about the momentum they feel from the Harris-Walz campaign .

“The energy is so powerful here. I mean it is just unbelievable,” said Rep. Chris Bell (D-District 65).

“There’s no question about the energy. There’s no question about the excitement,” said U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Mississippi).

President Joe Biden will kick off the festivities Monday night, less than a month after he decided to step aside and endorse Harris.

“My point of view is that he will address the crowd, the audience, and let them know everything that he has done through his four years as president of the United States, as well as what Kamala Harris is going to do for the future of the United States. So, I think it will be a love fest tonight, a kind of a going away celebration for him,” stated Bell.

Mississippi Democrats are hopeful for a Harris-Walz victory in November.

“Our commander in chief can be a female, and there’s no better person who’s been trained,” said Thompson.

“You’re not hearing anything about how terrible people are, how bad of shape we’re in. We’re looking towards the future,” said Rep. Zakiya Summers (D-District 68).

Harris will speak at the convention on Thursday.
