JACKSON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – Community college is part of many Mississippians’ pursuit of higher education, but a recent report shows that not all schools offer the same benefits.

WalletHub’s survey looked at 653 community colleges across 41 states. It found that Mississippi’s college system ranked 38th nationally. The average Mississippi community college ranked in the 15th percentile among all community colleges in the study. Two Mississippi schools were among the country’s five worst.

WalletHub’s analysis factored in cost, career and education outcomes for its students. Below is the breakdown of the data .

A trend of lower educational outcomes also continues at the university level. Data from Mississippi’s Institutions of Higher Learning showed that the six-year graduation rates at Mississippi’s public universities are 57.1%, over 10% lower than the national average. At Mississippi Valley State University, the graduation rate in six years is at 27.4%.

However, some state leaders desire to see changes to Mississippi community colleges. Last fall, Lieutenant Governor Delbert Hosemann (R-Miss.) advocated for free community college statewide. According to the Mississippi Community College Board, the system currently enrolls over 90,000 students.
