JACKSON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – College football returns to Mississippi this weekend, and the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) wants drivers to stay safe on the roads when they travel to see their favorite teams play.

MDOT’s “Road to Game Day” aims to keep drivers and passengers safe in vehicles and roadside workers safe along highways.

“Football season is an exciting time in our state, and we want to make sure that everyone makes it to the game safely,” said Brad White, MDOT Executive Director. “Put your phone down while driving, slow down in work zones and call a designated driver if you need one. We can all do these simple things to keep our loved ones and ourselves safe while on the road to cheer on our favorite teams.”

Here are some tips to stay safe behind the wheel and keep work crews safe in the field:

    • Never drink and drive, and always have a designated driver.
    • Pay attention to the road and your surroundings when you are behind the wheel.
    • Drive the speed limit.
    • Use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
    • Make sure to buckle your seat belt and wear it correctly.
    • Secure your load.
