LOUISIANA ( WJTV ) – Six men, including five men from Mississippi, were cited for alleged alligator hunting violations in Louisiana.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) enforcement agents said the incidents occurred on August 31 and September 1 in Tensas and Madison parishes.

On August 31, agents cited 57-year-old Ronald Smith and 40-year-old Cody Wallace, both of Brookhaven, Mississippi, and 28-year-old Austin Smith, of Jayess, Mississippi, for taking an alligator during a closed season in Tensas Parish.

On September 1, agents cited 28-year-old Hunter Rich, of Alabama, and 29-year-old Jacob Risher, of Pearl, Mississippi, for taking an alligator during a closed season in Tensas Parish. They also cited 66-year-old Larry Newell, of Raymond, Mississippi, for taking an alligator during a closed season in Madison Parish.

Agents said the suspects were caught after they had setup surveillance in the parishes.

According to the LDWF, taking alligators during a closed season carries a $400 to $950 fine and up to 120 days in jail. Violators may also face civil restitution totaling $375 for the replacement value for each of the three illegally taken alligator.
