Focused on Mississippi: Hummingbirds in the Fall

RANKIN COUNTY, Miss. ( WJTV ) – The hummingbirds have been hanging out and picking fights at my feeders this month. They’re getting ready for their migration southward.

If you like hummingbirds, then you are in the right place at the right time. September is just the time of year to see hummingbirds here in Mississippi. This is about the height of the fall migration southward for these fellows.

They’ve been as far north as Canada all summer, and they are heading back to Mexico and Central America to stay the winter right now, only to come back through here next March. These little guys get pretty hungry as they are packing up for South America, so keep your feeders full and fresh.

When should you take down hummingbird feeders?

While you can buy humming bird food, you can make your own; four cups of water and one cup of sugar. Boil the water, dissolve in the sugar, let it cool and then put it in the feeder. And perhaps start making another batch, because it goes quick during this migration season.

Hummingbirds do remember where the snacks are. The ones visiting you heading south this fall will probably come back to see you on the way north next March.

If you’d like to see some migrating hummers up close, and perhaps even get to release one out of your hand after it has have been banded, then go to the annual Humming Bird Festival at the Pascagoula Audubon Center, which will be held September 20-21, 2024.

The hummingbird numbers will begin to taper off in about six weeks or so.

I have 4 feeders up. They're busy little guys. I always make up the nectar and keep it in my fridge. It goes fast! They love it! I'm going to miss them.
