JACKSON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – Even though the demographics of the Jackson metro have not changed much recently, data over the last half-century shows how different Jackson has become.

Many places around the metro have transformed considerably since 1970. For instance, many more people now live outside of Jackson. Additionally, the racial and age makeup of the area now makes the Jackson of yesteryear almost unrecognizable. USA Facts analyzed historical data from the U.S. Census Bureau to show how Jackson has changed.

Below are the key numbers from its findings:

County/year Population Black White Other 0-34 years old 35 and older
    Hinds (1970) 215,608 39.2% 60.6% 0.1% 62.6% 37.4%
    Hinds (2022) 217,730 (+1%) 73.5% 24.7% 1.8% 47.7% 52.3%
    Madison (1970) 30,058 62.1% 37.8% 0.1% 64% 36%
    Madison (2022) 111,113 (+269.7%) 38.4% 57.3% 4.3% 44.8% 55.2%

The Jackson metro had a more than 53% increase in its population thanks to the meteoric growth of Madison and Rankin counties over the last 50 years. In contrast, Hinds County’s population remained mostly stagnant. Warren and Yazoo County’s populations decreased.

The white population in Madison, Rankin and Yazoo counties increased in varying degrees between 1970-2022. Hinds and Warren County’s share of Black residents also increased over those 52 years. Representation of other minorities across the metro has also dramatically increased.

The Jackson metro area has aged significantly during the period. In 1970, most people living in and around Jackson were not old enough to run for president. In 2022, there are 40% more people who are 35 years old or older living in the Jackson metro on average.
