PEARL, Miss. ( WJTV ) – Starting in 2025, a new baseball team will call Trustmark Park home.

The Mississippi Braves finished their last game in the City of Pearl on Sunday before their move to Georgia.

The new team will be an expansion of the Frontier League.

On Monday, Pearl Mayor Jake Windham said the sales tax revenue has tripled since the M-Braves moved to the city two decades ago, and they want to continue the momentum. City leaders immediately went to work to find a new team, so Trustmark Park did not sit empty.

“We didn’t sit around and drag our feet. We immediately started figuring out ways how we could get a team back here. And I’m very thankful for that. You know, as a mayor, you do not want to see a structure like this sitting empty,” Windham said.

Voting will take place September 9-27 for the new team’s name. The potential names are the Mississippi Mud Monsters, Mississippi Grits and the Mississippi Soul Shakers.

This is why Jackson MS could not have baseball! I have never seen anything like it. Why can’t cities in the metro area have multiple venues and stores? Competition is healthy. When you travel in the USA the same stores are in repetition. In Mississippi cities take stores from Jackson! Why can’t those stores be in both cities? Why can’t baseball be played in both cities? It is embarrassing to see the progress of the states surrounding Mississippi. There isn’t a need to be defensive. The statistics say that Mississippi is last. Not me
