    Child dies after being hit by school bus in Madison neighborhood

    MADISON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – Madison police are investigating after an eight-year-old girl was hit by a school bus and later died from her injuries.

    The incident occurred around 4:20 p.m. on Cobblestone Drive at Rockwood Drive in Madison on Wednesday, October 2.

    The girl was taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) in critical condition and died from her injuries. The Madison County coroner identified the child as Jeanelle Fredericks.

    “We thank you for your continued prayers for the family, The Madison County School District, medical staff and all first responders on scene. This matter remains under investigation and the results of the investigation will be forwarded to the Madison/ Rankin County District Attorney’s Office,” Madison police said.

    Police said there have been several rumors on social media regarding the possible intoxication of the bus driver. According to officers, a DUI/Drug Recognition expert was on scene as part of the investigation.

    “There are no preliminary indicators that would lead investigators to believe that the driver was impaired; however, toxicology samples have been submitted for examination and the department is awaiting the results,” police said.

    The Madison County School District released a statement about the death of the student.

    The Madison County Schools family is heartbroken at the loss of a precious student in a tragic accident on Wednesday, October 2. Our prayers and deepest condolences go out to the student’s family members and friends. On Thursday and in the days to come, additional counselors will be on hand providing support for students and staff at Madison Avenue Upper Elementary and Madison Avenue Elementary. We encourage parents to reach out to the counselor’s office at their child’s school for additional resources or supports in helping their children through this difficult time.
