JACKSON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – In a world where cybercrime is an ever-increasing threat, a national survey reveals that Mississippi is the best place to keep your data safe.

According to a USA TODAY Blueprint survey of 2,000 American adults, 84% of them are concerned about the security and privacy of their data online. Seven in 10 Americans are also victims of cybercrime. But if there was an oasis for avoiding such calamities, it would be the Magnolia State. USA TODAY ranked Mississippi as the safest state for data privacy.

This data is a profitable commodity for many companies. It is also a valuable asset for nefarious actors. Below is how the state faired in six major categories related to personal data.

    • Mississippi has the second-lowest rate of cybercrime
      • The state has 101 cybercrimes per 100,000 residents
    • Mississippi has the lowest number of data breaches of all states
      • The state has 0.4 breaches for every 100,000 residents
    • Mississippi citizens are the safest in the U.S. from phishing/spoof crimes
      • The state has 1.1 crimes per 100,000 residents
    • The state has the second-fewest personal data breaches
      • Ten Mississippi residents out of 100,000 experience such breaches in Mississippi
    • ID theft is the eighth-lowest in Mississippi
      • Three in every 100,000 Mississippians fall victim to this crime
    • Mississippi’s privacy laws are the 22nd strongest nationally
      • The state tied with 29 other states and Washington, D.C., for the same ranking
Mississippians not concerned about cybersecurity, data shows

A July survey based on Google search data revealed that Mississippians are among the least concerned about cybersecurity nationally. Despite a low cause of concern, Mississippians also facing the lowest risk of cybercrime nationally might not cause many to worry about becoming more vigilent.

Still, statewide organizations have proactively protected themselves and Mississippians’s data. In June , Microsoft announced a new cybersecurity program to support hospitals serving more than 60 million people living in rural America. The program benefitted Greenwood Leflore and Sharkey Issaquena Hospitals.
