    Former Jackson police officer pleads not guilty to murder charge

    JACKSON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – The former Jackson police officer accused of killing a man earlier this year was indicted by a Hinds County grand jury.

    Marcus Johnson was indicted on the charges of first-degree murder and shooting into a dwelling. He pled not guilty on October 8, 2024.

    Johnson was charged in connection to the fatal shooting of 25-year-old Carlos Collins, which occurred at the Tapestry Apartments on April 9. Johnson was captured in Louisiana on April 10 after a chase from Vicksburg. The chase started on Interstate 20.

    According to Detective Tommie Brown, Johnson worked for the Jackson Police Department (JPD) for eight months in 2013. He was separated from JPD pending disciplinary actions leading up to his immediate termination. Brown said Johnson resigned just prior to his termination.

    Johnson’s trial has been scheduled for March 10, 2025.
