JACKSON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – Two Jackson students were injured after they allegedly stole a teacher’s vehicle and later crashed.

The crash occurred on Interstate 220 South near Watkins Drive around 11:15 a.m. on Thursday, October 10.

Jackson police said the unidentified students were able to steal a Jim Hill High School teacher’s keys and drove off with the vehicle. During the crash, police said one student was ejected. They were both taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) with non-life threatening injuries.

No charges have been filed at this time, but the investigation is ongoing.

WJTV 12 News reached out to the Jackson Public School District (JPS) about the incident.

This afternoon, two Jim Hill High School scholars were involved in a single-car accident on Interstate 220. According to initial reports, one student took the car without authorization after receiving permission to retrieve an item from a vehicle.

Tragically, one of the female passengers was ejected from the vehicle during the accident. She was immediately transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. The district is investigating to determine if the other student involved will face criminal charges for unauthorized vehicle possession.

We are deeply concerned by this incident and are fully cooperating with local law enforcement as the investigation continues.

Our thoughts are with the individuals involved and their families during this difficult time.

Sherwin Johnson, Executive Director of Public Engagement at JPS
