JACKSON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – As electricity becomes a more important part of our lives, so does excessive power usage.

Just in time for Halloween, Solar Compare has uncovered the impact of “vampire energy.” Instead of electronic devices being out for blood, they desire power, feeding on it when the device is not being used. As a result, the website found that Mississippi has the 10th highest amount of these ghastly power drains.

In Mississippi, the average electric bill adds up to $2,100 per year, the tenth highest cost nationally. Vampire energy costs $346.50 annually in Mississippi, a 16.5% bite of that overall bill. With vampire energy costs totaling over $465 million across the state, it is the 10th highest annual rate nationally.

The Mississippi grid is characterized by a diverse mix of energy sources and a significant reliance on natural gas. In 2021, natural gas accounted for 72% of the state’s electricity generation. The Grand Gulf Nuclear Power Station in Port Gibson produced 17% of the state’s electricity. Coal and renewable energy made up 8% and 3% of the state’s energy production, respectively.

The 113 million residences in America today collectively use an estimated 22% of the country’s energy, according to the U.S. Department of Energy . The heating and cooling of spaces alone account for more than half the average energy bill. Visit energysavers.gov for ways to lower your power bill.
