(WJW) – Ohio was once home to a fish that is believed to have been bigger than any living great white shark and might have even eaten sharks!

    It’s name: “Dunk”

    Well, “Dunk” for short.

According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, dunkleosteus terrelli was the top predator about 360 million years ago. That’s about 130 million years before the first dinosaurs even roamed the earth.

“It had a strong, fast bite and might have eaten early sharks, bony fish, smaller placoderms, and ammonoids (animals related to squids that had coiled shells),” according to ODNR.

The dunkleosteus terrelli is Ohio’s state fossil fish. ODNR recently shared a picture of what the massive fish is believed to have looked like on their Facebook page .

One commenter joked, “I had one break my line in Cleveland harbor last fall when walleye fishing! Unfortunately, I didn’t get a picture.”

Thankfully, today Lake Erie is free from any fish of this size but some Dunk fossils can be seen at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.
