COLUMBUS, Ohio ( WCMH ) – Ohio is among the top three states where drivers receive the most speeding tickets, a 2024 report states.

Insurify, an insurance shopping website, analyzed data from its database of more than 97 million quotes from partner companies to determine which states’ drivers receive the most speeding tickets.

The study ranked Ohio in third place, with 7.8% of drivers having a speeding ticket on record, rising above the national average of 4.1%. The website also states the average full coverage car insurance rate in Ohio is $150 per month, which jumps to $222 for those with a speeding ticket.

Ohio saw 27,676 speed-related crashes in 2023, resulting in 338 fatalities and 1,344 serious injuries, according to Insurify. The website points to a few potential reasons why Ohio ranks so high, including the use of photo-monitoring devices to detect and enforce speeding citations.

Additionally, The Ohio State Highway Patrol uses a data-driven approach to identify areas where dangerous speeding is most likely to occur to assign enforcement details. In Ohio, repeated violations or driving significantly over the limit can result in a third-degree or fourth-degree misdemeanor, $500 in fines, and up to 60 days in jail, the study states.

Taking the No. 1 spot was North Dakota, with 8.7% of drivers with a speeding ticket on record. The study points to low speeding ticket fines as a possible reason the state ranked in first place.

The state with the second highest number of drivers with speeding tickets is Wisconsin, tied with Ohio at 7.8%. In fourth place is Iowa (7.1%) and in fifth place is Idaho (7.1). Completing the top 10 is Wyoming (6.8%), South Dakota (6.7%) Virginia (6.6%), Utah (6.5%) and Oregon (6.4%).
