I-Team: 3 arrested in shooting of Brinks truck driver

CLEVELAND (WJW) — Cleveland police arrested three suspects and are searching for a fourth following a shooting of a Brinks truck driver on Wednesday afternoon.

The shooting happened at about 1:30 p.m. in the area of East 105 ^th Street and St. Clair Avenue. Officers were alerted to the area by ShotSpotter, a gunshot detection alert system. The shooting happened near an ATM at a local bank.

The 65-year-old victim was taken to the hospital for treatment.

“The initial investigation revealed that approximately four males approached the victim in an attempted robbery,” Sgt. Wilfredo Diaz, Cleveland police spokesman, said. “During the encounter, shots were fired, striking the victim. The suspects then fled in a vehicle. Officers immediately began checking the area for the vehicle and located it a short time later. Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle; however, the vehicle refused to stop. A brief pursuit ensued, ending shortly after when the suspect vehicle crashed into another motorist. Four suspects fled from the vehicle on foot; however, three of the four males were arrested, and a firearm was recovered.”

Police said the driver of the vehicle that the suspect crashed into, a 19-year-old woman, did not report injuries at this time.

A Brinks spokesperson issued a statement on Wednesday evening that reads, in part:

“We are aware of the incident in Cleveland and are cooperating with local authorities to understand what happened. Our first priority is ensuring the health and well-being of our employees and the public.”
