    2 killed in crash on state Route 57 in Elyria: OSHP

    ELYRIA , Ohio (WJW) — Two people were killed and two others were injured in a two-vehicle crash on Thursday afternoon on state Route 57 in Elyria.

    It happened just before 3:30 p.m. near the Griswold Road intersection, according to a news release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol .

    Investigators learned a Nissan Altima being driven by a 40-year-old Amherst man was headed north on state Route 57 and went through a red light, hitting another Toyota Corolla being driven by a 48-year-old Lorain man, that was turning east onto Griswold Road, according to the release.

    Just before the crash, an Elyria police officer had been trying to stop the Nissan Altima, according to the release.

    Two passengers in the Altima, Tanner Smith of Cleveland and Meghan Incorvaia of Wakeman , both 36, died of their injuries at the scene. The driver was flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland with life-threatening injuries.

    None of the occupants of the Altima were wearing seatbelts, according to the patrol.

    The driver of the Corolla was transported by ambulance to an Elyria hospital with serious injuries.

    The crash remains under investigation. Charges have not been filed.

    State Route 57 holds the highest number of crashes among all the highways in Lorain County , with more than 1,800 crashes in the past five years, 11 of them fatal, according to state patrol crash statistics .
