‘Hearts are shattered’: 5-year-old dies after shooting self with parents’ gun

SANTAQUIN, Utah (WJW) — The parents of a 5-year-old boy are mourning the loss of their son after he reportedly found a handgun in their Utah home and accidentally shot and killed himself last week.

The Santaquin Police Department confirmed to the Associated Press that the boy was found with a single shot to the head in his parents’ bedroom.

The boy’s father reportedly ran to his aid after hearing the 9 mm gun go off, but authorities said the child was confirmed dead at the scene.

The family released a statement to local TV station KUTV following the tragedy:

On August 22, 2024, the Wilson and Hunsaker families experienced an unimaginable tragedy, losing a cherished member who will be deeply missed. However, through our faith in Jesus Christ, we will get through this trial, as we feel his love so abundantly. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to those who responded and to the community for their overwhelming support and compassion. This heartbreaking incident has taught us difficult lessons, and we deeply regret that it unfolded this way. Our hearts are shattered, and we hope that our family’s loss serves as a poignant reminder of how quickly life can change. We hope this tragedy serves as a reminder for others to take every precaution to ensure the safety of their children. As we come together to grieve, we kindly ask for privacy during this difficult time as we mourn the loss of our beloved little boy.

It was not made clear how the boy found the gun, and no charges have been filed in this case.
