    Cooling centers open in Northeast Ohio due to high heat

    CLEVELAND (WJW) – Several local communities have opened up cooling centers as extreme heat returned to Northeast Ohio this week.

    A Heat Advisory had been issued for many local counties from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday. An Air Quality Alert is also in effect at midnight through Tuesday night. Find the latest weather alerts here.

    Local schools closed Tuesday for extreme heat

    Canton

    The city of Canton is partnering with the following locations to offer cooling centers for residents through Friday, June 21:

    • Refuge of Hope: 715 Second St NE, Canton, OH 44704
      • Open through Friday, June 21 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
      • Guests must enter through door #4.
      • Water and food will be available at the facility
    • J. Babe Stearn Center: 2628 13th St SW, Canton, OH 44710
      • Open through Friday, June 21 from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
      • Guests must enter through the main door

    According to city officials, the Stark Area Regional Transit Authority is offering transportation to the cooling centers.

    Cleveland

    Cleveland’s Department of Public Works is extending hours at six recreation centers Tuesday and Wednesday so residents can cool off during the hot temperatures.

    The following locations will be open from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. both days:

    • Zelma George Neighborhood Resource & Recreation Center: 3155 Martin L. King Blvd.
    • Collinwood Neighborhood Resource & Recreation Center: 16300 Lakeshore Blvd.
    • Gunning Neighborhood Resource & Recreation Center: 16700 Puritas Ave.
    • Kovacic Neighborhood Resource & Recreation Center: 6250 St. Clair Ave.
    • Michael Zone Neighborhood Resource & Recreation Center: 6301 Lorain Ave.
    • Frederick Douglass Neighborhood Resource & Recreation Center: 15401 Miles Ave.

    Rocky River

    Rocky River city officials say The Don Umerley Civic Center will be open to the public during normal business hours on Tuesday and Wednesday so they can cool off and charge their phones.
