DAYTON, Ohio ( WDTN ) — Several University of Dayton students were assaulted this past weekend during two violent incidents just blocks apart.

The first incident happened just before 1 a.m. on Saturday when a UD Police Officer on patrol noticed a man walking in the south student neighborhood near Kiefaber Street.

Local schools closed Tuesday for extreme heat

The officer saw at least three unknown men tackle the man who was walking and started to hit him. The officer quickly got out of his cruiser, but, the men ran away, taking with them personal items including the student’s phone.

Students who live nearby but do not want to be on camera say they always try to walk together due to safety.

“Have one of my guy friends walk with us because even if I’m walking with another girl, it’s still scary because it’s just us girls,” said one UD student.

Less than 24 hours later, the second incident happened when students outside their residence on Lawnview Ave. were approached by a group of unknown individuals.

When the group tried to steal a table from the residence a fight broke out — three students were hurt when they were cut by bottles and broken glass. Before police could get there, the suspects ran away.

Officials at the University of Dayton say they are actively investigating the two incidents.

In a statement, they said, in part:

We are committed to fostering a safe campus environment for everyone through active patrols in the student neighborhood and surrounding areas and educational opportunities.

UD campus police say they are going to continue to monitor the area. Students are encouraged to say something if they see something and to call upon the officers if needed.
