SEE IT: One of the rarest mammals on the planet has been spotted

QUEENSLAND, Australia (WJW) – Ecologists in Australia are very excited to see what they say is “rare footage” of a juvenile Northern Hairy-nosed Wombat waddling around a nature refuge in Queensland.

Why are they so excited?

Well, according to the Australian Wildlife Controversy , which shared the video on social media, there are only about 400 of these hairy-nosed critters left making it “one of the rarest mammals on the planet.” And, the fact that they say this is a juvenile means it’s a “positive sign that the wombats are breeding again.”

The Northern Hairy-nosed Wombat has been considered critically endangered in Queensland since 1992.

According to experts, wombats are a marsupial and their closest living relative is the koala.

When they walk their behinds sway from side to side making them appear slow and clumsy, but wildlife officials say don’t be fooled. The wombat can run about 24 miles per hour for a short distance. Look out!
