I-Team learns how hit-and-run suspect is defending himself

CLEVELAND (WJW) –The FOX 8 I-Team has found how a man is defending himself against charges for a deadly hit-and-run that killed a child.

A defense attorney for Donald Mynatt believes police may have the wrong man. Friday morning, Mynatt went before a Cleveland judge to begin facing charges.

Police said last month, Mynatt hit and killed 7-year-old Amir Prewitt. Investigators said he hit the child, turned around and took off.

Mynatt had been on the run. This week, U.S. Marshals tracked him down. He now is being held in jail on a bond of $5 million.

Defense Attorney Bret Jordan entered a plea of not guilty, and he suggested Mynatt may not have been driving.

“That is the information I have right now,” he told the I-TEAM.

We asked why Mynatt hadn’t turned himself in after a warrant had been issued.

“He did give me a call. We were putting together some evidence for our side. We were eventually going to turn him in, and the Marshals came before we got to that point,” Jordan said.

Cuyahoga County Prosecutors said they have witnesses.

The case will now be heard by a grand jury, and more charges are likely to be added.

Mynatt also had been wanted for not showing up for court in a domestic violence case. He goes to court on that next Tuesday.
