‘Not worth the risk’: Mother offers warning after fire started by dishwasher

TOPEKA, Kan. (WJW) — One Kansas family is speaking out after their dishwasher caught fire in the middle of the night.

Simone Anderson took to TikTok recently to explain she had loaded up the family dishwasher on Aug. 7 and then went to sleep.

By about 1:30 a.m. the smoke detector alerted the family that the kitchen was engulfed in flames. Soon the house would be filled with thick, black smoke.

Anderson explained she and her husband only had time to grab their kids before safely getting out of the home.

“We are devastated. Please pray for my family. Check your smoke detectors. Don’t run appliances at night. It’s not worth the risk,” Simone said in a TikTok video , which has garnered more than 1.7 million views and plenty of comments thanking the mother of two for sharing her story.

It’s unclear what led to the fire at this time, but an investigation is underway. Damages total thousands of dollars, according to Anderson .

Officials recommend running your dishwasher while awake and at the house in case of fire or another issue.
