Preparations underway for 10th Annual Dick Goddard Cleveland APL Telethon

CLEVELAND (WJW) — Meet 10-year-old Lula.

The 60-pound pit/lab mix now is in the care of the Cleveland Animal Protective League , after being abandoned by its owner.

“We don’t know that much about her background so what we do is we encourage families to come in together,” APL President and CEO Sharon Harvey told FOX 8. “We had to treat her for an upper-respiratory infection, for some fleas, she didn’t have anything major going on, but she needed the Cleveland APL and our team to be here.”

Lula along with dozens of other breeds of dogs and cats are currently waiting to be adopted into loving homes. But until then, the APL needs your help for their continuous care.

“We added on just under 9,000 square feet and what we did is we transformed this facility from being a really good animal shelter to it being more than just a shelter,” Harvey said. “We’ve become resource for our community.”

In preparation of the 10th annual Dick Goddard APL Telethon, workers are putting up signage and setting up the phone bank, where dozens of volunteers will be standing at the ready to take your donations.

Last year’s telethon raised more than $193,000 and over the last nine years, we’ve gotten $1.5 million.

Founded in 1912, the APL is a voluntary organization that accepts, picks up and shelters unwanted or homeless animals. Its daily operating budget is now at $26,000, funding surgeries, medicine, food and more.

“For people who are tuning-in for the first time enjoy, please make a gift and come on in and visit us because we’re a gorgeous facility and these animals are here,” Harvey said. “They need homes and we’re just so grateful that we get this opportunity.”
