CLEVELAND (WJW) – Cleveland and Northeast Ohio can expect to see a partial lunar eclipse Tuesday, but the real show is coming in 2025.

A partial lunar eclipse will take place on Tuesday night from about 10:13 p.m. to 11:13 p.m., according to information from the Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.

According to local Astronomer Jay Reynolds , the timing will vary slightly, based on how far east or west the eclipse is being viewed from.

The peak maximum coverage will take place in Northeast Ohio around 10:44 p.m

According to Reynolds, about  40% of the world will see some aspect of Tuesday night’s partial lunar eclipse.

In Northeast Ohio, we will see a “small snippet” of the event with the top of the moon being slightly darkened for about an hour.

    There is one problem.

Clouds may hinder the view of the partial lunar eclipse in Northeast Ohio, according to Fox 8 Meteorologist James Parish. Click here to see the latest forecast.

Tuesday’s partial eclipse coincides with a full supermoon.

If you miss the partial eclipse, there’s another on the way!

According to Reynolds, the larger, more impressive event will take place on March 14, 2025, around 2:30 a.m.

In March, Northeast Ohio can expect to see a total lunar eclipse.

“Our area will experience an excellent Blood Red Total Lunar Eclipse this coming March,” Reynolds said. “A total lunar eclipse (100% coverage) is when the moon turns a ‘blood red’ color. The moon is 100% in the Earth’s Umbral Shadow.”

According to Reynolds, the Earth has two shadows. One is a lighter shadow called the Penumbra and the other is a dark shadow called the Umbra.

The fraction of the moon’s diameter covered by the Earth’s umbral shadow will be less than 8.5% during the partial lunar eclipse on Tuesday.

“(During) this partial lunar eclipse, the moon will just graze the Umbra shadow of the Earth,” Reynolds said.
