CLEVELAND (WJW) – New studies are taking a closer look at Burke Lakefront Airport and what would happen if the city closed it down to retain more greenspace along Lake Erie.

Cleveland city officials released the two studies Monday, stating they’re part of Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb’s ongoing plans to make the lakefront accessible by the community.

The first study looked into the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements and the financial implications of possibly closing the airport, while the second study looked into the impact of redeveloping the 245-acre space where the airport currently stands.

According to city officials, the studies revealed that Burke brings in about $76.6 million in direct economic activity annually.

Officials say its impact on the city’s economy is “relatively small” and most of that money would stay in the Cleveland area even if Burke closed.

According to the report, if at least 200 acres of the land was retained for parks and greenspace, next to mixed-use development in the area, this “maximum development scenario” would bring in an estimated $92 million in direct economic activity every year.

“These studies are crucial in helping us understand the feasibility and potential benefits of transforming Burke Lakefront Airport into a space that better serves our community,” Bibb said in a press release. “The findings have reinforced my long-held belief that closing Burke is both possible and economically advantageous for Cleveland.”

Bibb pointed out that no decision on the airport’s future has been made yet, but the city of Cleveland is working with the FAA and other groups to “explore a possible path forward.”

“For decades, elected officials, businesses and our residents have shared ideas about the best use of Burke, the property on which it sits, and our lakefront,” said Cleveland City Council president Blaine Griffin. “The release of this report will allow us to connect quantitative research with the many thoughts and opinions shared over the years. Council will thoroughly review this report, rely on the feedback of our constituents, and work with our partners in the administration and the federal level to determine the appropriate next steps.”

It’s prime lakefront. Proper Development of that property can only improve Cleveland’s future as a first class city . Spreading east. Look at Ohio city . 20 years ago it was a pit. Homeless everywhere. Urban development programs and now look at it. It’s contagiously moving west.
