MADISON, Wis. (WFRV) — Authorities in Wisconsin are investigating an incident where they found a bar was operating at over 50% of its lawful capacity and had over 150 underage patrons consuming alcohol.

According to a release , the Madison Police Department’s Central Community Policing Team, along with several other officers, conducted a bar check, which resulted in officers contacting over 150 underage patrons at a single bar.

Officers say this bar was over 50% of its lawful capacity, and several of the underage patrons contacted had been cited at prior bar checks. These patrons will receive additional citations.

The Central Community Policing Team regularly conducts bar checks and other liquor law enforcement. They want to remind the public that people under the age of 21 cannot drink alcohol in a bar.

Some of the most common citations being written from Sept. 6’s event are:

    • Underage Person Not to Possess or Consume Alcohol Beverages on Licensed Premises
      • Fine: $376-$1,006
    • Underage Person Enters or Attempts to Enter Licensed Premises
      • Fine: $376-$1,006
    • Underage Person Intentionally Carrying ID Not Theirs or Carrying Altered or Duplicated to Convey False Information
      • Fine: $376-$1,006
    • Resisting Arrest or Obstructing
      • Fine: $439

“If you are contacted by police during one of these bar checks, the best thing you can do is, to be honest with the officers, provide them with your legal identification card (or name and date of birth), and turn over the false ID you were carrying,” stated the Madison Police Department.

The release says cooperation and honesty typically result in the issuance of a single citation, and attempting to flee police or lying about your name and date of birth will only lead to more citations.
