SANDUSKY, Ohio (WJW) – Twenty people are facing charges in connection to a drug trafficking ring that operated around the Sandusky area, the U.S. Department of Justice announced on Thursday.

Officials unsealed the 63-count superseding indictment, accusing the group of illegally distributing controlled substances such as fentanyl, methamphetamine and cocaine between April 2023 and August 2024.

According to court records, Johnson allegedly delivered bulk cocaine to Sandusky buyers through “a network of associates and stash houses to store, break-down, package and redistribute narcotics and profits resulting from the illegal drug trafficking,” the DOJ said.

According to the indictment, some members of the operation allegedly worked out of a Sandusky bar to distribute drugs to customers in the area.

Others received bulk meth through the mail, while another used an unlicensed gambling house as a distribution center in Sandusky, the indictment alleges.

Through the investigation this past spring and summer, law enforcement arrested the suspects and agents confiscated large amounts of fentanyl, fentanyl analogues, cocaine, methamphetamine, firearms and cash.

Investigators say they found thousands of fentanyl pills disguised as prescription medication.

“This was a highly organized, poly-drug distribution organization, supplying our communities with bulk quantities of controlled substances including fentanyl in both powder and counterfeit pill form. These quantities had the potential to kill hundreds of thousands of people. Today’s
enforcement action demonstrates the strength of our partnerships and our commitment to keeping our communities safe” said DEA Special Agent in Charge Orville Greene in a press release.

The investigation was handled by multiple agencies, including the DEA, Sandusky Police Department, and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

“The Sandusky Police Department is proud to have such a great partnership with both the DEA and Ohio BCI. It is because of these partnerships that this investigation resulted in the arrests of several individuals and the seizure of substantial amounts of fentanyl, fentanyl pills, methamphetamine, and cocaine,” said Sandusky Police Chief Jarod Oliver. “Our community is safer today because of the tireless efforts of our detectives, the BCI agents and the DEA in dismantling this drug trafficking operation.”
