SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio (WJW) – Following a two weapons incidents and social media threat, administrators at Shaker Heights High School are implementing what they call “enhanced safety protocols.”

According to the Shaker Heights City School District , a student brought a knife to school on Wednesday, Aug. 18.

That student is facing charges, the district said.

The district said there was also a social media threat to the school that was deemed not to be credible.

In response, the high school began searching bags and students with handheld metal detectors upon entry at school.

“We understand that these changes may be an adjustment, however they are designed to ensure that our staff and students have a safe and secure learning environment,” Principal Eric Juli wrote in a letter to parents announcing the changes.

Last Friday, Aug. 16, a Shaker student was taken into custody for having a gun before the football game against Euclid High School.

Police also used handheld metal detectors on spectators at the game after the incident.

The district said it is reviewing security measures for future events.
