(WJW) – The Summit County OVI Task Force has canceled sobriety checkpoints that were planned for Friday night into Saturday morning.

Officials previously said law enforcement would be out looking for impaired drivers this weekend.

The task forced confirmed Friday night’s checkpoints would be canceled, citing inclement weather.

According to officials, last year in Ohio, there were more 11,000 OVI-related crashes that resulted in 725 people being killed.

OVI checkpoints are funded by federal grant money.

In 1990, the Supreme Court upheld the use of sobriety checkpoints as long as they meet certain guidelines, which includes public notification.

This is so stupid. Let's make drunk drivers aware, so they go a different way and kill or injure someone.
