SEE IT: ‘Mediocre’ Bridgerton-themed ball in Detroit is a big bust

(WJW) — If you found yourself slightly obsessed with “Willy’s Chocolate Experience” in Glasgow, Scotland earlier this year, mainly for the sheer disappointment of the event, you’re in luck! There’s a new themed experience that left a lot to be desired.

This one happened stateside, in Detroit .

On Sept. 22, fans of the hit Netflix show Bridgerton put on their gowns, jewelry and tiaras and headed to a ball…or what they thought would be a ball. One they assumed would be full of glitz and glam. One with a full orchestra. One that would lead some to believe they were this year’s “diamond.”

But alas, the event wasn’t quite as advertised.

One of the attendees, Ky Elsena, said on her Instagram that she and three of her friends paid about $600 to attend the event with VIP access.

In her video, Elsena noted a complete lack of structure. Her own footage from the event shows a downstairs area and VIP section with tables and chairs, but no one was checking VIP tickets and people had to seat themselves. Bottled water was being handed out to guests because there was no bar, she said. And there was one buffet-style area for food.

“And that was just the first floor, because the rest of the floors, it just gets worse,” she said.

Elsena said the rest of the event was just “mediocre.”

“The venue was beautiful. The decorations, the setup, mediocre.”

Her video then takes viewers to the second floor where photo ops were set up. Attendees could get a picture with the queen, paper backdrops, and a small vase of flowers set up in a corner which Elsena guessed “was supposed to be a focal point?” She also noted how people had to pay extra for some of the experiences.

Up on the third floor was the ballroom. Vendors lined the perimeter of the room, which Elsena wasn’t thrilled with, but “not my circus, not my monkeys,” she said. Her video showed a few people dancing, and what appeared to be a stripper pole on the dance floor.

“There was supposed to be programming, there was like a random stripper pole on the floor that I guess was supposed to, ya know, have a performer. We didn’t stay long enough to see that so I’m not sure if that happened or not,” she said.

For the most part, Elsena said, most people were just taking pictures. There was no live orchestra, just a DJ.

Needless to say, it didn’t feel like a night straight out of any Bridgerton season, and according to WXYZ Detroit , some attendees are asking for their money back.

Chelsea Beard, an event planner associated with the ball, posted a video and apology for the event on Instagram , saying in part “Our goal was to create a magical evening, but we recognize that organizational challenges and unforeseen changes, including a last-minute venue and date change, impacted the experience for some guests. Unfortunately, some nonrefundable deposits from the original bookings resulted in losses on our end, which added to the challenges. Nonetheless, we take full responsibility for these shortcomings.”

The statement went on to say “Please know that we are working diligently to address all concerns and will be reaching out with further details shortly. Your feedback, both positive and constructive, is greatly appreciated.”
