Teen hit by Elyria police cruiser, taken to hospital: PD

ELYRIA, Ohio (WJW) – A teenager was taken to the hospital after investigators say he was struck by an Elyria police cruiser Friday afternoon.

According to the Elyria Police Department, officers responded to an accident at the corner of West Avenue and 11th Street at 4:15 p.m.

Through the investigation, officers determined a Silver 2010 Honda Accord, believed to be involved in the crash, was speeding south down West Avenue.

Investigators say the Honda driver lost control and hit a 2017 Ford Expedition head-on. That suspect then got out of the Honda and fled on foot, according to Elyria police.

Investigators say a 15-year-old boy who wasn’t involved in the situation was standing behind the Honda. Investigators say he ran across West Avenue and was hit by a responding officer in an Elyria police cruiser.

The teen was taken by ambulance to University Hospitals. His condition is unknown at this time.

“The Elyria Police Department wishes the 15-year old teenager a full and speedy recovery,” Elyria police said in a press release Friday night.

The officer, who wasn’t injured in the crash, was placed on administrative leave, per the police department’s policy. The crash is being investigated.

Two people in the Ford suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect in the original crash hasn’t been found, Elyria police officials said, and the investigation is ongoing.
