Man on scooter dies after being hit by box truck in Wilkes County, troopers say

WILKES COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) — A man on a scooter was hit by a box truck in Wilkes County on Wednesday and died after being taken to a hospital, according to a North Carolina State Highway Patrol news release.

Around 2 p.m., troopers responded to and investigated a fatal crash in Wilkes County on NC 268 at Liberty Grove Road.

A 2012 Tao-Tao scooter going north on Liberty Grove Road entered the intersection at a red light and was hit by a 2020 Hino box truck going west on NC 268.

The man on the scooter, Kevin Scott Johnson, 60, of Hays, was airlifted to a hospital where he died, troopers say.

The driver of the box truck was not hurt.

NC 268 was partially closed for around an hour during the on-scene investigation.

Investigators don’t believe speed or impairment were contributing factors in the crash.

No charges will be filed in this case.
