I-Team: Student stabbed at Maple Heights High School

MAPLE HEIGHTS , Ohio (WJW) — A Maple Heights High School student stabbed another student with a box cutter in a fight on Tuesday at the school, city Police Chief Todd Hansen told the FOX 8 I-Team .

The two students began “mutually fighting” in a classroom when one of the students pulled a box cutter from his backpack, reads a Tuesday news release. It happened just before 10 a.m.

The two students “had been fighting with each other in the recent past and had some disagreement in class” on Tuesday, according to the release.

The student with the box cutter cut the other student on the forehead and abdomen, according to the release.

Security and police officers broke up the fight and detained both students.

Maple Heights firefighters treated the cuts at the scene and transported the student to a hospital for further treatment. The student is in stable condition, with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the release.

The student armed with the box cutter also cut his own hand and was transported to a different hospital for “superficial” injuries, then later to the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Detention Center, where he’s now being held on felonious assault charges.

The incident prompted a lockdown that lasted for about an hour, school officials told FOX 8 News.

“Our district is committed to the safety and education of all our students. When situations arise, we work directly with the Maple Heights Police Department to ensure a quick and coordinated response,” reads a statement from the district.
