GEAUGA COUNTY, Ohio (WJW) – County leaders in Geauga County want to see crimes being committed come to an end after numerous reports of political yard signs favoring both presidential candidates being damaged or stolen.

The chairs for both the Geauga County Republican Party and the Geauga County Democratic Party spoke to FOX 8 on Wednesday.

“We find it upsetting and we’re not in favor of anything being destroyed no matter whose political signs they are for either party,” Republican chair Joan Windnagel said.

“It’s taking away from the political process when crimes like this are committed and we want to see it stopped,” party secretary James Midyette added.

Democratic Chair Janet Carson said the damage is having an adverse effect for whoever is doing it, because she believes it’s only making people feel more strongly about the candidate they support. That being said, she still finds it very troubling.

“That’s unfortunate,” she said. “Normally, we don’t have that in Geauga County, we’re a pretty quiet, tranquil, safe place to be, but we have had many, many people tell us they are afraid to put up large, visible yard signs in visible locations.”

Both sides condemned the actions, as did Geauga County Sheriff Scott Hildenbrand, who confirmed they’ve received several reports spread out in the county.

Hildenbrand said the incidents reported to them seemed isolated and added they haven’t been able to track anyone down because of how quickly the crime can be committed.

He added that theft is a charge someone could face if they were caught because people don’t just get free signs anymore. Many pay money for larger signs.

“So, when they get vandalized like that, I mean not only is it not right, but they’re out some money,” he said. “Let’s have an uneventful election. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Everyone can put the sign up that they want for the people that they support. Allow them to do that. It’s going to be over soon.”

I like the one on X where the mask-wearing dude drives over a Trump sign and gets a flat.
