CLEVELAND (WJW) — The Cleveland Animal Protective League is waiving adoption fees for two days this weekend, in order to free up space to house pets from Florida animal shelters now inundated in the wake of the “catastrophic devastation” wrought by Hurricane Milton .

The APL is waiving adoption fees for adult cats and dogs and also offering a $50 adoption promotion for kittens on Friday, Oct. 11, and Saturday, Oct. 12, according to a news release.

“During this critical time, we are committed to supporting our friends working in Florida animal shelters by providing a safe haven for their adoptable animals,” Sharon Harvey, president and CEO of the APL, is quoted in the release. “It’s difficult to imagine the tragedy unleashed on the communities in the path of these devastating storms. Both humans and animals are suffering. We urge our animal-loving, Cleveland community to help by adopting or fostering animals who are in our care now, so we can create enough space to bring shelter animals from Florida to the APL which, in turn, will allow them to help animals who have been displaced from their families by these storms.”

The Michigan-based Bissell Pet Foundation is now coordinating transportation for the animals from Florida to Ohio, according to the release, but the APL can’t accept them unless they find foster or adoptive homes for the pets currently in their care.

The APL is also looking for more volunteer foster families to temporarily care for animals that are not ready for adoption, also freeing up more cage space at the shelter. Potential foster families can call 216-377-1635 or email foster@clevelandapl.org .
