New report: Cleveland residents reported damage during recent tornadoes, storms

CLEVELAND (WJW) – While the nation has watched the latest hurricane rip through Florida, the FOX 8 I-Team is tracking a new report on damage from recent tornadoes and strong storms that barreled through Northeast Ohio.

Tornadoes and severe weather hit our area hard in early August.

Now, we’ve learned in Cleveland that 750 people reported some kind of damage from those storms.

But, the city says most of those reports involved things like a loss of food. Those kinds of losses do not qualify for federal aid.

The severe weather in August caused significant damage in Brook Park and some other local towns.

Then, the mayor’s office in Cleveland put out a call to the public to help document all of the damage in the city.

The city says it has received 750 responses, but most noted minor damage, or loss of food, since many people lost power even for days.

The report showed only one property destroyed and two with major damage.

No individuals or families in the city qualify for federal aid, yet some help could be on the way.

The city government could end up with some federal assistance, and we’re told that is being reviewed.
