    Waffles sold at Giant Eagle, Walmart, Target recalled

    OAK BROOK, Ill. (WJW) — Frozen waffles sold under dozens of different brand names at Giant Eagle , Walmart , Target and other stores in the U.S. and Canada have been recalled due to possible listeria contamination.

    The waffles were sold in packages of various weights under the Giant Eagle brand, Walmart’s Great Value brand and Target’s Good and Gather brand, as well as under the Best Choice, Clover Valley, Kodiak Cakes, Tops and many other brands, according to a voluntary recall notice from TreeHouse Foods .

    Consumers should reference the UPC on the back of their carton as well as the lot code and best by date with the full list of brands, codes and dates on the TreeHouse Foods website . See photos of the recalled products here .

    Consumers should dispose of the recalled products or return them for a credit. For questions, call the company at 1-800-596-2903 from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Monday through Friday.

    Listeria is a bacteria that causes listeriosis, a rare but serious infection. It’s more of a risk to newborns, pregnant people and older adults, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention .

    It presents with fever, flu-like symptoms such as muscle aches and fatigue, headache and a stiff neck, among others. Anyone who thinks they may be infected should contact their health care provider.

    Infections can be severe or even fatal in young children, frail or elderly people or the immunocompromised and can cause miscarriages and stillbirths, according to the notice.

    As of Friday, Oct. 18, there have been no confirmed reports of illnesses, according to the release.

    The contamination was discovered during routine testing at the manufacturing facility, according to the release.
