How much Akron will pay Jayland Walker’s family for police killing

AKRON , Ohio (WJW) — The family of Jayland Walker has reached a $4.85 million settlement with the city of Akron in a federal lawsuit related to Walker’s fatal shooting by police in June 2022.

In a joint statement released Monday, the city announced the settlement would be paid in four installments over the next four years.

Mayor Shammas Malik emphasized the administration’s commitment to ongoing dialogue with the community, including the Walker family, to assess and improve safety policies.

As part of the ongoing review of police practices, the Malik administration has updated the city’s vehicle pursuit policy.

A Summit County grand jury previously declined to indict the eight officers involved, who fired a total of 94 shots in under seven seconds, hitting Walker 46 times.
